Strong roots, mighty branches: our family tree.
Rooted in Haiti and reaching across the globe, the Fombrun Family is the living legacy of Charles Fombrun and Maria St-Léger Perrier-Fombrun, a visionary couple who laid the foundation of a lineage defined by resilience, excellence, and unity.
Charles, born in Gonaïves in 1889, was a statesman, educator, and proud descendant of the Desdunes family of the historic Rosignol-Desdunes plantation. As the first elected Senator of the Artibonite in 1930, he dedicated nearly three decades to defending Haiti’s constitutional values and serving the nation with integrity.
Maria, born in 1892 in Miragoâne, brought the strength and elegance of her ancestry — granddaughter of Baroness Théma Duplessis of Emperor Faustin I’s court — into her roles as a devoted partner, artist, and mother.
She found joy in painting and writing, and remained a steady, compassionate force beside Charles during their 48 years of marriage.
Their union on November 25, 1914, produced twelve children and became the starting point of a powerful intergenerational chain.
Today, in June 2025, the Fombrun family proudly counts 250 “Maillons A” — the first links of each branch in this growing global tree. These maillons represent not only direct descendants, but also the transmission of values, traditions, and identity that bind us across borders.
From Haiti to North America, Europe, Africa, and beyond, Fombruns contribute to society as leaders, creatives, educators, entrepreneurs, and global citizens — always honoring the family’s deep Haitian roots and shared legacy.
We are more than a name — we are a family connected by history, by love, and by purpose.
Together, we are the Fombruns.
The story of Charles Fombrun
- Born: October 9, 1889
- Die: July 3, 1961 (aged 71)
A Statesman in the Heart of 20th Century Haiti
Charles Fombrun, born on October 9, 1889, was a prominent Haitian statesman who played a central role in the country’s political evolution during the early to mid-20th century. He held several key positions in government, serving twice as Minister of the Interior (1922–1923 and 1926–1928) and later as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship from 1941 to 1942 under President Sténio Vincent. Known for his administrative competence and political acumen, Fombrun became a trusted figure in the Haitian cabinet during times of both national reconstruction and rising political tension.
In 1956, he was elected Senator representing the Artibonite department and later rose to become President of the Haitian Senate. His tenure coincided with a period of intense political transformation in Haiti, just before François Duvalier came to power. Fombrun’s leadership in the Senate placed him at the forefront of legislative affairs during this pivotal era. He passed away on July 2 or 3, 1961, in Port-au-Prince at the age of 71, leaving behind a legacy of committed public service during some of Haiti’s most formative decades.
